The volunteers were among six crew members dispatched to assist a yacht in distress near the South Ballina break wall on Monday evening. In dangerous conditions, their vessel capsized while crossing the bar, triggering a large-scale emergency response.

Despite the efforts of additional rescue crews who rushed to the scene in challenging, low-visibility conditions, two volunteers lost their lives. The person aboard the stricken yacht also died.

Four surviving crew members made it to shore and are currently receiving medical treatment. Their survival and bravery have been acknowledged with deep gratitude.
