NSW Introduces SMS Rego Alerts to Help Drivers Avoid Costly Fines
Motorists across New South Wales who forget to renew their vehicle registration will soon receive a text message reminder, as the State Government rolls out new measures aimed at reducing accidental unregistered driving.
The Minns Labor Government has announced the introduction of SMS notifications for drivers whose registration has expired, providing an additional safeguard to help motorists avoid fines and improve road safety.
More than 50,000 drivers were fined last year for operating unregistered and uninsured vehicles, prompting the Government to expand its digital reminder system through Service NSW.
The new initiative forms part of a broader campaign encouraging vehicle owners to opt in to digital registration reminders. Nearly one million motorists already receive alerts through email, the MyServiceNSW inbox and the Service NSW app six weeks before expiry, two weeks before expiry, and again one day after registration lapses.
Under the updated system, motorists signed up for digital reminders will also receive an SMS notification the day after their registration expires. The additional text alert is designed to provide a quick and convenient prompt for those who may overlook email notifications.
Drivers who choose not to opt in to digital reminders will continue receiving traditional paper notices by mail approximately six weeks before registration is due.
Throughout May and June, Service NSW will contact up to 4.5 million motorists encouraging them to activate digital registration reminders.
The Government is reminding motorists that vehicles must not be driven once registration has expired until renewal is completed. Registration requirements help ensure vehicles remain roadworthy and covered by compulsory third-party insurance in the event of a crash.
More information about digital registration reminders is available through the Service NSW website and app.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said the additional SMS reminder could save motorists from costly penalties caused by simple oversights.
"Thousands of motorists are fined every year for driving unregistered vehicles, and we want to reduce the risk of people being caught out by a missed payment," Mr Dib said.
"We know people are juggling busy lives and important paperwork can sometimes be forgotten or misplaced. This extra text reminder gives motorists another opportunity to renew their registration before they unknowingly drive uninsured."
Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said the reminders would help motorists avoid serious consequences.
"Driving an unregistered vehicle doesn't just carry financial penalties - it can also leave drivers uninsured and place other road users at risk," Ms Aitchison said.
"These SMS notifications are a simple and practical way to help people stay on top of their registration obligations and avoid making an honest mistake."
