Police were called to a hotel on Wickham Terrace in Spring Hill shortly before 6pm following reports that a man wanted over a number of alleged property offences was at the location.
Acting Chief Superintendent Simon Taylor said officers entered a hotel room where four people were present and identified themselves to the group.
According to police, the 18-year-old man from Annerley then attempted to escape by climbing over a sixth-floor balcony to reach a lower level. During the attempt, he fell and suffered critical injuries.
Officers immediately began CPR before paramedics arrived at the scene, however the man was declared deceased shortly afterwards.
