Police believe a 24-year-old Canadian man was walking along a footpath in Carlton Gardens near Carlton Street when he was approached by an unknown offender about 11.35pm on Wednesday, 6 May.

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a stabbing in Carlton overnight and are calling for public assistance.

Police believe a 24-year-old Canadian man was walking along a footpath in Carlton Gardens near Carlton Street when he was approached by an unknown offender about 11.35pm on Wednesday, 6 May.

During the incident, the man was allegedly stabbed in the hand before the offender fled the scene on foot.

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say the offender left the knife at the scene. The person is described as wearing dark, loose-fitting clothing and a hood covering their head.

At this stage, detectives believe the attack was random and unprovoked.
