US and UK Strike Yemen Again
The United States and the United Kingdom have carried out airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, hitting at least 30 locations across 10 different sites.
Among the targets were command and control centers, an underground weapons storage facility, and other weaponry utilized by the Houthis to threaten international shipping routes.
In a proactive move on Saturday, US Central Command announced that it successfully intercepted and struck six Houthi anti-ship cruise missiles before they could be launched towards the Red Sea.
These consecutive strikes follow the Biden administration's multi-tiered response to a drone attack that resulted in the death of three US service members and injuries to numerous others over the previous weekend.
The Biden administration is cautious about escalating tensions into a regional conflict with Tehran and, therefore, has refrained from directly targeting Iran.
Instead, the focus has been on striking some of Iran's influential proxies in the region, serving as an indirect means of sending a message to Iran's leadership.
There is a growing unease within Iran about the actions of certain militant organizations it supports, even though it doesn't exercise direct control over them.
On Friday, the US conducted unilateral strikes on four sites in Syria and three in Iraq, hitting over 85 targets, including command and control centers, intelligence facilities, and weapons sites.
While the National Security Council expressed confidence in the success of these strikes, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized that these actions marked the beginning of their response.
The Biden administration has committed to further actions against Iranian-backed groups in Iraq and Syria, though specific details and timing remain undisclosed.
Approximately 24 hours after the initial strikes in Iraq and Syria, the US carried out additional strikes in Yemen on Saturday.
This marks the third instance in recent weeks where the US and UK collaborated on joint operations against Houthi targets.
The first occurred on January 11, involving around 30 strikes, followed by another round targeting eight sites less than two weeks later.
The prior strikes focused on disrupting Houthi weapons storage facilities and radar sites, aiming to impede the Iran-backed rebel group's capacity to threaten international shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, critical waterways on a global scale.
