Stewart and Steer go deep, Reds beat Giants

CINCINNATI (AP) - Spencer Steer and Sal Stewart hit solo home runs and Brady Singer allowed one run in six innings as the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Singer (1-1), who lasted 2 2/3 innings in his previous start, needed just 75 pitches to get through six innings on Tuesday. He allowed one run and six hits with no walks and one strikeout.

Emilio Pagán pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save.

The two homers were the only hits allowed by Giants starter Robbie Ray (2-2), who had a 12-inning scoreless streak snapped. He issued four walks, struck out six and needed 94 pitches to get through five innings.

TIGERS 2, ROYALS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Kenley Jansen got his 479th save, moving past Lee Smith for sole possession of third place on the career list, and Detroit rallied from an eighth-inning deficit to beat Kansas City for their fourth straight win.

Jansen allowed a leadoff single in the ninth to Lane Thomas, who stole second, then advanced to third on Salvador Perez's groundout. Vinnie Pasquantino grounded out, with Thomas holding at third, and Jansen retired Starling Marte on a flyout for his third save this season.

Only Mariano Rivera (652) and Trevor Hoffman (601) have more saves.

Carter Jensen hit into a run-scoring forceout in the second off Framber Valdez, who allowed three hits in seven innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 4, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Ildemaro Vargas hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to lift Arizona to a victory over Baltimore.

A night after the Orioles rallied from a 7-1 deficit, Arizona turned the tables with a smaller comeback. The Diamondbacks were down 2-0 when Vargas connected off Trevor Rogers (2-1) for his second homer of the year.

Merrill Kelly (1-0) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings in his first start of the season. He walked four and struck out three.

Ryan Thompson retired Jeremiah Jackson on a grounder with the bases loaded in the eighth to preserve Arizona's one-run lead, and Paul Sewald worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save.

Geraldo Perdomo had three hits for Arizona.

CUBS 10, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Carson Kelly hit a three-run homer, Colin Rea pitched six strong innings and Chicago rallied to beat Philadelphia.

Nico Hoerner and Alex Bregman each had three RBIs for the Cubs.

Edmundo Sosa homered for the Phillies.

NATIONALS 5, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - CJ Abrams went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs as Washington held off Pittsburgh.

Abrams hit a solo shot down the left-field line in the fourth inning to extend the Nationals' lead to 4-1. He also hit the third of three consecutive RBI singles in the first inning, following Brady House and Daylen Lile, as Washington took a 3-0 lead.

The shortstop is 9 for 17 in his last five games with three home runs and seven RBIs.

Recalled from Triple-A Syracuse earlier in the day, left-hander Mitchell Parker (1-0) struck out five in two scoreless innings of relief as the Nationals won for the fourth time in five games.

Gus Varland pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save, working around a double and a walk.

Brandon Lowe and Joey Bart hit solo homers for the Pirates. It was Lowe's seventh of the season.

ANGELS 7, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Trout homered for the third time in two games, combining with Jo Adell and Jorge Soler for three consecutive long balls in a five-pitch span against Ryan Weathers in the first inning, and Los Angeles beat New York.

Trout hit a 2-1 fastball to the loading dock adjacent to Monument Park in center field and Adell hit another fastball on the next pitch into the visiting bullpen in left-center field. Three pitches later, Soler drove a 2-0 fastball into the left-field seats

Trout homered for the third straight at-bat after connecting in the sixth and eighth innings in Monday's 11-10 loss.

Los Angeles hit three straight homers for the first time since June 24, 2023, at Colorado, and sent the Yankees to their sixth loss in seven games.

Reid Detmers (1-1) allowed one run and four hits in seven-plus innings, walked none and struck out nine - all on breaking balls.

BRAVES 6, MARLINS 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Dominic Smith hit a go-ahead, three-run double in the eighth inning as part of a four-RBI night, and Atlanta rebounded from a four-run deficit to beat Miami.

Atlanta trailed 4-0 in the second inning and 5-3 in the eighth when Drake Baldwin singled off Pete Fairbanks (0-1) leading off, Mike Yastrzemski singled with two outs and Ozzie Albies was hit by a pitch.

Smith pulled a cutter that landed on the warning track in left-center for his third hit. Smith, who drove in Atlanta's first run with a second-inning single, is batting .395 with 15 RBIs.

Baldwin had two hits and drove in a run, giving him 18 RBIs.

Robert Suarez (2-0) allowed Otto Lopez's run-scoring single in the eighth.

Raisel Iglesias struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 100th save with the Braves, his third this season.

TWINS 6, RED SOX 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Byron Buxton homered twice and Mick Abel pitched seven sharp innings as Minnesota beat Boston.

Buxton had four hits and scored four runs, while Brooks Lee also homered for the Twins. Minnesota has won eight of nine.

Abel (1-2), who was acquired from the Phillies at last year's trade deadline for closer Jhoan Duran, allowed four hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out a career-high 10. Boston, which is last in the AL East, was shut out for the first time this season.

Red Sox starter Sonny Gray (2-1) gave up five runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout over four innings.

PADRES 4, MARINERS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Xander Bogaerts had three hits and three RBIs, and Mason Miller pitched a perfect ninth inning for San Diego, who beat Seattle for their sixth straight win and ninth in 10 games.

Miller got Randy Arozarena to fly out to right field, struck out Luke Raley and induced J.P. Crawford to ground out to second base to record his fifth save and extend his scoreless innings streak to 29 2/3, the longest active streak in the majors and third-longest in Padres history. Miller has struck out 20 of his 27 batters faced.

The Padres took the early lead in the Vedder Cup, named after Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who has ties to both cities. The teams, which share a spring training complex, formalized the competition last year, when the Mariners won the season series 5-1 to claim the trophy, a Fender Telecaster guitar signed by Vedder.

Seattle's four-game winning streak ended. Those victories were a home sweep against Houston.

ATHLETICS 2, RANGERS 1

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Jacob Wilson hit a two-run single and made a nice defensive play at shortstop, helping the Athletics to a win over Texas that ended a seven-game losing streak against the Rangers.

The A's have won six of seven after a 3-7 start and have four one-run wins in their last seven games.

Jeffrey Springs (3-0) allowed one run and five hits over 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Mark Leiter Jr. struck out two in a perfect ninth for his second save, finishing a four-hitter.

DODGERS 2, METS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto and rookie Nolan McLean dueled through seven innings, Kyle Tucker singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth and Los Angeles edged the Mets, sending New York to its seventh straight loss.

The Mets have been outscored 36-10 during their skid, dropping into the NL East cellar at 7-11.

Tucker's two-strike hit to left off reliever Brooks Raley (0-1) scored pinch-hitter Miguel Rojas, who walked and took second on pinch-hitter Santiago Espinal's sacrifice.

Shohei Ohtani extended his streak of reaching base to 48 consecutive games with an intentional walk by Raley in the eighth. He finished 0 for 3.
