OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly seeking a substantial investment of trillions of dollars to revolutionize the global semiconductor industry, addressing the ongoing supply-and-demand challenge for AI chips.

The Wall Street Journal disclosed Altman's consideration of a project aimed at increasing the global chip-building capacity, with discussions reportedly underway with potential investors, including the government of the United Arab Emirates.

According to sources, Altman may need to secure between $5 trillion and $7 trillion for this ambitious endeavor.

In a recent post on X, Altman emphasized the necessity for expanding AI infrastructure, including fab capacity, energy, and data centers, asserting that it is crucial for economic competitiveness.

He expressed OpenAI's commitment to contributing to the development of massive-scale AI infrastructure and a resilient supply chain.

This initiative follows previous controversies surrounding Altman's chip-related ventures and investments. Before a brief hiatus as OpenAI's CEO, Altman sought billions for a project code-named "Tigris," aiming to compete with Nvidia.

Additionally, Altman's personal investment in the AI chip startup Rain Neuromorphics in 2018 and OpenAI's subsequent commitment to spend $51 million on Rain's chips in 2019 have stirred past controversies.

Nvidia has dominated the generative AI market, experiencing significant financial success in recent years.

The company's GPUs power large language models used by major players like OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta.

With about 80% control of the AI chip market and a market cap nearing $1.72 trillion, Nvidia's success has become a target for Altman.

OpenAI, known for its widely used ChatGPT bot, has faced challenges due to limited GPU capacity in the past.

Altman's push for increased chip-building capacity aligns with his vision to address the growing demand for AI infrastructure.

The ChatGPT bot, launched in November 2022, became a record-breaking consumer app, boasting over 100 million weekly active users and adoption by over 92% of Fortune 500 companies.
