Hamas Responds to Gaza Ceasefire Plan
Hamas has officially responded to the proposed ceasefire plan for Gaza put forward by Israel, the US, Qatar, and Egypt. The specific details of the agreement have not been disclosed at this time.
The initial reports suggested a six-week truce, during which additional Israeli hostages would be exchanged for Palestinian prisoners.
Both Israel and the US have indicated that they are currently reviewing Hamas's response. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is presently in the Middle East, mentioned that he would be discussing Hamas's reply with Israeli officials on Wednesday.
Despite acknowledging that there is still much work to be done, Blinken expressed the ongoing belief that an agreement is not only possible but also essential.
The conflict in Gaza originated from an unprecedented cross-border attack by Hamas gunmen on southern Israel on October 7.
This attack resulted in approximately 1,300 casualties and around 250 people being taken hostage. Since then, over 27,500 individuals have lost their lives in Gaza, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.
In a week-long ceasefire in late November, 105 Israeli and foreign hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians held in Israeli jails.
On Tuesday, Israel confirmed that 31 of the 136 remaining hostages in Gaza had tragically lost their lives.
