Three major players in the US media landscape, namely Walt Disney's ESPN, Fox Corp, and Warner Bros. Discovery, have unveiled plans for a collaborative sports streaming platform set to debut in the upcoming autumn season.
Boasting an extensive array of sports rights, including prestigious events such as the FIFA World Cup, Formula 1, NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball, the joint venture aims to attract younger audiences while optimizing operational costs.
The initiative will introduce a novel brand, featuring an autonomous management team, accessible through a newly developed app.
Pricing details for the service are yet to be disclosed, as mentioned in the joint statement.
The partnership involves an equal distribution of ownership, with each company holding a one-third stake in the venture and maintaining parity in board representation.
This strategic move comes in response to the escalating costs associated with acquiring broadcasting rights from sports leagues, which have shifted from being solely the domain of linear TV operators to involving multiple media distributors.
The envisioned platform will seamlessly integrate sports linear networks with Disney's direct-to-consumer service, ESPN+.
The collaborative effort aims to cater to sports enthusiasts, particularly those outside the traditional pay TV bundle.
Additionally, subscribers will have the option to bundle the new sports streaming product with existing streaming platforms offered by the participating companies, namely Disney+, Hulu, and Max.
Bob Iger, Walt Disney's CEO, expressed enthusiasm, labeling the launch as "a major win for sports fans and an important step forward for the media business."
Lachlan Murdoch, Fox's CEO, highlighted the platform's capability to consolidate "an array of amazing sports content all in one place," while David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros.
Discovery, emphasized how it "exemplifies our ability as an industry to drive innovation and provide consumers with more choice and enjoyment."
