Bitcoin Reclaims $1 Trillion Market Cap Milestone
Bitcoin has reclaimed its $1 trillion market cap milestone, surging to a more than two-year high. The cryptocurrency's market value exceeded $1 trillion as it reached $51,789.58, marking a 4% increase, with a peak at $52,079.00 - its highest level since December 2021.
This positive momentum can be attributed to the success of U.S. spot bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), which have bolstered investor confidence.
The surge is notably fueled by the rising popularity of U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, with approximately $9.5 billion flowing into the bitcoin market since their launch on January 11.
This influx of funds has played a pivotal role in revitalizing demand for bitcoin, contrasting with the previous month's market sentiment affected by outflows from the Grayscale Bitcoin ETF (GBTC).
Data from CryptoQuant reveals that over the past two weeks, more than 71% of new investments in bitcoin originated from spot ETFs, excluding GBTC.
As a result, bitcoin's market cap, representing the total value of circulating bitcoin, surpassed $1 trillion for the first time since late 2021, according to CoinMarketCap.
Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, also experienced a 4% increase, reaching $2,765.69 in the wake of bitcoin's surge.
The positive momentum extended beyond the cryptocurrencies themselves, impacting related stocks.
Coinbase, a prominent trading platform, saw a 14% increase, while Microstrategy, a bitcoin proxy, rose by 12%.
Mining companies Iris Energy and CleanSpark surged by 20% and 12%, respectively, and Marathon Digital and Riot Platform both jumped by 14%.
Bitcoin's impressive rally in 2023, registering a 157% increase, was driven by anticipation surrounding the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which materialized in January.
Despite a temporary dip in bitcoin's price following the ETF approvals, investors remain optimistic about the cryptocurrency's outlook for the year.
In addition to ETF inflows, investors are closely monitoring the upcoming halving event, scheduled for April. This event, embedded in bitcoin's code and occurring every four years, restricts the cryptocurrency's supply.
