New Spirit Ferries Set to Drive Major Summer Tourism Boost
A record summer season on Bass Strait has set the stage for an even bigger year ahead, with the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels expected to begin sailing later this year.
More than 320,000 passengers travelled aboard Spirit of Tasmania services over summer, highlighting strong demand for travel between Tasmania and the mainland.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kerry Vincent said the arrival of the new vessels marks a major milestone for Tasmania's tourism and freight sectors.
"Spirits IV and V are now safely in Australian waters and they are an impressive sight," Minister Vincent said.
"These vessels will significantly boost capacity ahead of the upcoming summer season, and the industry is already preparing for the opportunities they will create."
The new ships are expected to transform Bass Strait travel by delivering greater passenger and freight capacity, along with upgraded onboard comfort and amenities.
Minister Vincent said the investment represents a long-term commitment to Tasmania's future, with each vessel expected to remain in service for more than 25 years.
"The new Spirits will support sustained growth in tourism, freight and jobs across the state," he said.
"That certainty gives businesses and operators the confidence to plan ahead and invest for the future."
Meanwhile, construction at Devonport's Berth 3 continues to progress, with the 700-tonne gantry nearing completion and final structural sections now in place.
Minister Vincent said TT-Line intends to bring both ships to Devonport in August to begin gantry testing, ahead of the first sailings planned for October.
"By delivering this critical infrastructure, we are helping prepare Tasmania for a strong and prosperous future," he said.
"I congratulate everyone involved in delivering this important gateway to our state."
