United Airlines has introduced a novel approach to its MileagePlus loyalty program, inviting members to share their frequent flyer miles with friends and family.

This move, initiated on Thursday, marks a significant shift in the dynamics of loyalty programs and reflects United’s confidence in customers’ willingness to embrace collective benefits.

Under this new system, termed as “pooling,” a designated “pool leader” can select up to four companions, be they family members or friends, to participate in a joint mileage account.

While the leader must be at least 18 years old, there’s no age restriction for the pool members, allowing families to utilize their children’s miles for travel expenses.

Participants maintain their individual MileagePlus accounts and have the autonomy to determine the extent of their contributions to the collective pool.

These accumulated miles can subsequently be utilized for various purposes, including booking flights and purchasing other products through United’s platform.

Luc Bondar, the chief operating officer of United’s MileagePlus loyalty program, emphasized the permanence of contributions to the pool once made.

He stated, “Once those miles are in the pool… they stay in the pool,” underscoring the commitment required from participants.

This innovative approach not only fosters a sense of community among MileagePlus members but also offers flexibility and efficiency in utilizing accrued miles.

United’s initiative represents a progressive step in redefining the landscape of loyalty programs within the airline industry.
