The Queensland Government has committed new funding to support a significant tourism upgrade on Great Keppel Island, reinforcing its status as a key destination for visitors.

A $1.8 million investment will go toward revitalising the Great Keppel Hideaway, including a major upgrade to its bistro facilities aimed at enhancing the visitor experience. The project forms part of the state's $80 million Tourism Icons Investment Fund, designed to deliver world-class tourism offerings across Queensland under the Destination 2045 strategy.

The latest funding builds on more than $7.6 million already allocated this year to 30 regional tourism initiatives, supporting growth and development in communities statewide.

The government says the investment reflects a renewed focus on strengthening the tourism sector, encouraging private investment, and delivering sustainable, high-quality experiences that support jobs and regional economies.

Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell said the funding would improve facilities while preserving the natural appeal of the island.

"This investment is about delivering better experiences for visitors while protecting what makes Great Keppel Island unique," he said. "We are supporting operators and rebuilding confidence in the tourism industry as part of a long-term plan to grow a sustainable sector."

Member for Keppel Nigel Hutton said the project would enhance one of the region's most recognisable attractions.

"Great Keppel Island is a cornerstone of our local tourism industry, and this upgrade will help ensure it continues to grow in a way that benefits the economy while respecting its natural environment," he said.

Great Keppel Island Hideaway Managing Director Peter Lowe described the funding as transformative for the island's main hospitality hub.

"The bistro renewal will create a more welcoming space for both day visitors and overnight guests, boosting tourism and supporting local businesses," he said.

Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll also welcomed the investment, noting the island's importance to the regional economy.

"Great Keppel Island drives a significant share of the Capricorn Coast economy, and this funding will strengthen its position as a leading tourism destination with strong domestic and international appeal," she said.

The government has also committed $1 million through the same fund to the Outback Tourism EcoLink Project at the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame in Longreach. Additional projects under Round 1 of the Tourism Icons Investment Fund are expected to be announced later this financial year, with applications for the next round opening in 2026.
