Extreme Heat Grips Northern India, Power Usage Surges to New High
Northern India continues to endure an intense and prolonged heatwave, with little relief in sight as temperatures keep climbing across multiple states.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued comprehensive advisories aimed at helping residents cope with extreme heat conditions, urging precautions as the situation worsens.
Delhi recorded its highest temperature of the season so far, reflecting a broader trend of unusually high readings across the region.
In several areas, temperatures have risen at least five degrees Celsius above normal levels, signaling a growing heat stress risk for millions of people.
The soaring temperatures have also driven a surge in electricity consumption, as households and businesses rely heavily on cooling systems such as air conditioners and desert coolers.
According to data from the power ministry, India's peak power demand reached an all-time high of 252.07 gigawatts on Friday. This surpasses the previous record of 250 gigawatts set in May 2024, highlighting the strain the heatwave is placing on the country's energy infrastructure.
