Victoria Police's Illicit Firearms Squad has arrested two people and seized 3D printing equipment during a crackdown on the illegal manufacture of firearms in Melbourne.

On 12 August, detectives executed search warrants at homes in Doncaster, Heidelberg Heights, and Viewbank.

At the Doncaster property, police uncovered equipment allegedly used to produce 3D-printed guns, including two 3D printers, firearm components, printer filament, metal parts, and a laptop containing firearms-related files.

During the Viewbank search, officers seized three flick knives.

A 36-year-old Doncaster woman was charged with possessing equipment for manufacturing a firearm. She has been granted bail and is due to face Heidelberg Magistrates' Court on 1 October.

A 51-year-old man from Viewbank was interviewed and released pending further inquiries.

Detective Inspector Julie Macdonald from the Illicit Firearms Squad warned that manufacturing weapons-whether through traditional or 3D printing methods-carries serious risks and consequences.

"Privately manufacturing firearms is dangerous and can be fatal," she said.
"If anyone thinks 3D-printed weapons are less serious than other firearms offences, they are completely wrong. Penalties can be as severe as 10 years' imprisonment for manufacturing a firearm without a licence."

Police urge anyone with information about illicit firearm activity to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
