A P-plate driver has been caught speeding more than 50km/h over the limit in Laverton earlier today.

State Highway Patrol officers detected the 25-year-old man allegedly travelling at 156km/h in the emergency lane of the Princes Freeway around 6.30am.

The driver, from Braybrook, has been charged with multiple offences including dangerous driving, speeding, improper use of an emergency lane, and unsafe overtaking.

He is expected to be charged on summons.

Police impounded his Volkswagen Polo sedan, with towing and storage fees totalling $999.52.
