Meteor Triggers Sonic Boom Across Central Victoria, Potential Debris Between Bendigo and Ballarat
A blazing meteor lit up Victoria's skies on Sunday night, unleashing a powerful sonic boom that rattled homes across the state.
The spectacular event occurred just after 7:30pm, with sightings reported from the state's east through to Melbourne, Ballarat, and Bendigo. Social media quickly filled with images and accounts from stunned residents.
Many described hearing a loud explosion - likened to a sonic boom - that shook windows and startled communities. In Strathfieldsaye, near Bendigo, one woman said she rang her neighbour fearing their house had exploded. Others compared the sensation to the rumble of an earthquake.
Astronomy experts have confirmed the fireball was indeed a meteor rather than space debris. They believe fragments may have reached the ground, possibly scattered between Bendigo and Ballarat.
