BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – David Cifaldi and his two hiking companions were crossing Montana’s ominous Froze-to-Death Plateau and approaching the top of the state’s highest peak when their adventure took a bizarre and dangerous turn: Cifaldi slipped and impaled himself on his trekking pole as he fell.
Bison that appear to be grazing peacefully are able to accelerate into a terrifying pace, making them among the most dangerous animals in Yellowstone, where one of the giant bovines recently charged at and tossed a grandfather. Carl McDaniel, 65, suffered multiple bone fractures in the July 10 attack at the national park but lived to tell the tale.
Five firefighters battling a fast-moving wildfire in Colorado were forced to deploy their fire shelters when they couldn’t escape the flames. Three of them were overcome and died, while two were injured and hospitalized.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – For passengers on the budget Australian airline Jetstar, the days of cramming your bag into an overhead locker already full of your seatmates’ full-sized suitcases are coming to an end, but there’s a catch. The carrier will charge passengers for stowing carry-on bags in the overhead compartments, beginning in February 2027.

TOKYO (AP) – Honda’s profit for the fiscal first quarter more than doubled from a year ago, as the Japanese automaker continues to tackle a turnaround from the first full year loss in its history.
