In a devastating incident, current marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana lost their lives in a road accident near Eldoret in the Rift Valley region of Kenya on Sunday night, as confirmed by Kenyan police.

Kelvin Kiptum, a 24-year-old Kenyan athlete, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Premio when the accident occurred, resulting in the immediate fatalities of both him and his coach.

According to Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge, a third occupant in the vehicle survived the crash but sustained severe injuries.

The tragic incident unfolded around 11 p.m. local time when Kiptum lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, traveled approximately 60 meters, and collided with a large tree.

Kelvin Kiptum had recently achieved a world record marathon time of 2:00:35 during the Chicago Marathon in October of the previous year.

World Athletics had only recently ratified this impressive feat. Kiptum, who transitioned to marathon running just a year before setting the record, surpassed the previous record set by Eliud Kipchoge by 50 seconds, clocking in at 2:01:09.

Kipchoge, widely recognized as one of the greatest marathoners of all time, was succeeded by Kiptum as a potential candidate to break the elusive 2-hour barrier.

The late Gervais Hakizimana, aged 36, was a former professional athlete from Rwanda with a background in various races, ranging from the 5,000 meters to the half marathon.

This tragic incident has left the sporting world mourning the loss of promising talent in Kelvin Kiptum and the experienced guidance of coach Gervais Hakizimana.
