Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald says Council has listened to community concerns about the Public Transport Levy, particularly from residents in rural and regional areas who currently have limited or no access to public transport.

"We recognise the frustration felt by residents in areas where public transport options are scarce," Mayor McDonald said.
"That's precisely why the levy was introduced - to strengthen our advocacy to the Queensland Government and push for better services right across the region."

The Public Transport Levy, introduced as part of Council's 2024/25 Budget, is already funding strategic planning and projects aimed at long-term service improvements.

Key initiatives now underway include:

  • Supporting the Queensland Government's 50-cent fare initiative through smart technology solutions
  • Conducting a major review of the regional transport network to better align services with community needs
  • Promoting and educating the public about existing transport options
  • Planning for special event transport services and exploring new travel incentives
  • Investing in infrastructure to enable future public transport growth

Mayor McDonald said Council is placing strong emphasis on expanding transport services to communities that have traditionally been left out.

"We're looking closely at successful service models from other parts of Queensland to see how they can be adapted to suit our region's unique needs," he said.
"This is a region-wide initiative, funded regionally, and by working together we can deliver a more equitable, frequent, and accessible public transport system for everyone in the Toowoomba Region."
