Fast-Tracked Social Housing Boost for Toowoomba
More than 100 new social and affordable homes are set to be built in Toowoomba, as part of the Queensland Government's push to deliver more housing sooner.
The 108 homes, to be constructed in Glenvale, were recently fast-tracked through the new Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) pathway and approved by Deputy Premier and Minister for Planning Jarrod Bleijie.
The Glenvale project is one of four new social and affordable housing developments across Queensland approved in the past month, with the government saying the streamlined process will help ease pressure on the state's tight housing market.
Deputy Premier Bleijie said the decision forms part of the Crisafulli Government's commitment to deliver one million homes by 2044.
"The Crisafulli Government is driving approvals and investment to fix a decade of inaction and underinvestment from the former Labor Government which led to Queensland's housing crisis," Mr Bleijie said.
"Unlike Labor, we are working with councils and industry to get more homes built across Queensland, not playing the political blame game."
Since introducing the MID process, the government has approved 17 projects delivering 806 social and affordable homes, along with 98,000 new dwellings supported through the state's $2 billion Residential Activation Fund. Approval timeframes have also been cut from 10 months to just five.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O'Connor said the new Glenvale homes would make a real difference for Toowoomba residents doing it tough.
"After years of underinvestment, we're getting on with the job of delivering more social and community homes across Queensland," he said.
"Projects like this will provide safe and secure housing for vulnerable Queenslanders and help us reach our goal of 53,500 new social and community homes by 2044."
Treasurer and Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki said the project would provide a vital boost for the local community.
"This new planning process has cleared the way for 108 social and affordable homes right here in Toowoomba," he said.
"These homes will help more families, seniors and individuals in need to find a place to call home."
