The Tasmanian Government has announced a $22.5 million investment to safeguard the future of Nyrstar's Hobart smelter, securing more than 500 local jobs at one of the state's major employers.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the funding package was a significant step in supporting Tasmanian workers and their families, while strengthening local industry.

"We've been working closely with Nyrstar and Trafigura to chart a sustainable path forward, and today we're delivering on that commitment," Premier Rockliff said.

"This investment will ensure the Hobart smelter remains operational, with critical upgrades and maintenance to strengthen safety and performance at the site."

The funding will include both existing financial support already committed to Nyrstar-such as for its Electrolytic Cellhouse upgrade-and new streams of assistance.

Under the agreement, Nyrstar will carry out major capital works at the Hobart facility, engaging an estimated 200 additional contractors and suppliers during the process.

"We're backing industry, building Australia's sovereign capability, and supporting the hardworking Tasmanians who are the backbone of our economy," Premier Rockliff added.

The Tasmanian package is part of a broader $135 million national support plan to sustain Nyrstar's Australian operations during a nine-month transitional phase.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, highlighted the strategic importance of Nyrstar's presence in Tasmania.

"Nyrstar's Hobart facility plays a vital role in Australia's critical minerals supply chain, processing zinc sourced from Rosebery and across the country," Minister Abetz said.

Nyrstar contributes over $1.7 billion annually to the national economy, employing around 1,400 people directly and supporting a further 6,600 indirect jobs across Australia.
