Senior Liberal figures say the Liberal and National parties are ultimately more effective when working together, as debate continues over how long the current Coalition split should last.

Liberal senator Paul Scarr said both parties should be focused on rebuilding unity, arguing history shows the centre-right performs best when it is aligned.

"I think in the medium to long term, the evidence demonstrates that we are stronger when we are in coalition," Senator Scarr said.

"That is something everyone should be constructively working towards."

Senator Scarr also praised Opposition Leader Sussan Ley for her handling of the past week's political turmoil, saying she had responded with restraint and professionalism.

"I commend Sussan for the good grace with which she's handled recent events," he said. "She has certainly left the door open, and I think that's the appropriate posture to take at this point in time."

He said past political experience had shown that unity was essential for the centre-right to be electorally competitive and govern effectively.

"A lesson learned a long time ago is that if you want to be an effective government on the centre right of politics, you need to be united and put your best foot forward," Senator Scarr said.
