Bicheno Crowned Australia's Best Town for Travellers
Bicheno has claimed the title of Australia's best town, securing the top spot in Australian Traveller's prestigious "100 Best Towns in Australia to Travel To" rankings.
Tasmania performed strongly overall, with 10 towns earning a place on the national list, highlighting the State's growing reputation as a leading travel destination.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Jane Howlett said the recognition was a major achievement for Tasmania and the tourism operators who continue to deliver exceptional visitor experiences.
"Bicheno being recognised as Australia's best town is an outstanding achievement and reflects the dedication of our tourism and hospitality operators who proudly showcase the unique character of our regions," Minister Howlett said.
She said tourism continues to play a critical role in Tasmania's economy, supporting one in every six jobs statewide and one in three jobs along the East Coast - making it the nation's most tourism-dependent region.
"This recognition is a significant boost for local communities and businesses that work tirelessly to make their towns welcoming and memorable for visitors," she said.
Tourism Tasmania CEO Sarah Kingston Clark said the accolade reflected a growing trend of Australians seeking authentic and meaningful travel experiences closer to home.
"Today's travellers are looking for more than just a holiday destination - they want to connect with local people, hear the stories behind a place and experience a genuine sense of belonging," Ms Kingston Clark said.
She said Bicheno's appeal lies in its authenticity, from fresh seafood and local distilleries to regional wines, craft beers and the relaxed lifestyle enjoyed by locals.
"Bicheno earns this kind of recognition simply by being true to itself," she said.
The latest honour adds to Tasmania's growing list of tourism accolades in 2026, including Port Davey / On Board Expedition being featured in TIME's "World's Greatest Places", the Bay of Fires appearing in the BBC's "World's Best Beach Escapes", and Wineglass Bay being named among the "World's 50 Best Beaches".
The Tasmanian towns featured in the national top 100 rankings were:
- Bicheno
- St Helens
- Stanley
- Richmond
- Launceston
- New Norfolk
- Bridport
- Evandale
- Strahan
- Sheffield
Bicheno also ranked first in the "Emerging Towns" category, while Stanley topped the "History and Heritage Towns" category.
