So much for English dominance in European club soccer's biggest tournament.
The goals have been raining in against England's top flight clubs, which have seen their dominance of the competition in the league phase blown away in the knockout rounds.
A record six teams from England entered the Champions League and five qualified automatically to the round of 16. Newcastle made it a full set when it advanced via the playoffs. But it's been a different story over the past two weeks with Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle all eliminated.
Liverpool and Tottenham were hoping to overcome first leg deficits on Wednesday, with Arsenal so far the only English team to advance to the quarterfinals.
To make matters worse, defeats have been heavy.
Barcelona's 7-2 win at Camp Nou completed an 8-3 aggregate victory over Newcastle.
Paris Saint-Germain beat Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate and Real Madrid won 5-1 over two legs against Man City.
Tottenham went into Wednesday's home game against Atletico Madrid needing to overturn a 5-2 first-leg loss.
Liverpool was 1-0 down against Galatasaray after the first leg.
The last Premier League team to win the Champions League was Man City in 2023.
