Queensland Government Backs Mount Isa Rodeo, Securing $10 Million Boost for North West

The legendary Mount Isa Rodeo is set to return bigger and better this weekend, thanks to a vital funding lifeline from the Crisafulli Government.

Held from August 8 to 10 at Buchanan Park, the 66th annual event is expected to deliver more than $10 million in economic benefits to North West Queensland - a milestone that wouldn't have been possible without last year's government intervention.

When the Rodeo was placed into voluntary administration in October 2024, the Crisafulli Government stepped in with an emergency grant, provided through the Mount Isa City Council, to ensure the iconic event's survival.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, who will attend Saturday's official opening alongside Tourism Minister Andrew Powell, said the Rodeo's revival sends a strong signal about the government's commitment to outback tourism.

"This funding has secured the Rodeo's future, allowing it to ride into its 66th year stronger than ever," Mr Bleijie said.
"With more than 22,000 people expected to attend, the event will deliver significant economic and tourism benefits, supporting local jobs and businesses."

Tourism Minister Andrew Powell said the Rodeo was a major drawcard for both domestic and international visitors.

"Events like the Mount Isa Rodeo are tourism powerhouses," he said.
"They bring people from across Australia and the world to experience the unique energy of the outback. Our 20-year tourism strategy, Destination 2045, is focused on growing exactly these kinds of events."

Minister for Rural and Regional Development Dale Last said the government's support was about more than just saving an event - it was about backing the region's long-term future.

"The Mount Isa Rodeo showcases the region's strength, heritage, and potential," Mr Last said.
"When the event was on the ropes, we grabbed the reins and delivered the support needed. This is a vote of confidence in Mount Isa and its future."

Mount Isa Mayor Peta MacRae said the funding injection had put the Rodeo firmly back on track.

"This partnership has safeguarded the Rodeo's future," she said.
"It's one of our biggest economic and tourism drivers, and this year's event will be our best yet - bringing together more than 22,000 locals and visitors to celebrate this wonderful place we call home."

First held in 1959, the Mount Isa Rodeo has grown into one of Australia's premier outback events - and this year, the spotlight is shining brighter than ever.
