A man has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man in Beenleigh on Tuesday, 2 December.

Police allege the victim, a Bahrs Scrub man, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest at Hugh Muntz Park around 10.40pm. Despite efforts by officers and paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene shortly afterwards. A crime scene was established just minutes later.

Investigators identified a stolen white Kia Stonic, fitted with stolen number plates, leaving the area immediately after the shooting. Police later spotted the vehicle at Labrador, deploying a tyre deflation device on Jabiru Island. The car was abandoned a short distance away at the intersection of Hope Island Road and Helensvale Road, where a man reportedly fled into nearby bushland.

Around 2.15am, Dog Squad officers located and arrested a 22-year-old Beenleigh man, who was allegedly found hiding underwater among reeds near Saltwater Park. Ammunition was allegedly found during a search of the man, and a discarded firearm was also recovered nearby. A secondary crime scene was declared around the vehicle.

On 4 December, the arrested man was initially charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of explosives (ammunition), and receiving tainted property.

Following further investigations by Logan detectives and the Homicide Investigation Unit, the man has now been additionally charged with one count of murder.

He is due to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court this afternoon, 10 December.
