A man has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man in Beenleigh overnight.

Emergency services were called to Hugh Muntz Park about 10.40pm on December 2 after reports a man had been shot. Police located the victim, a Bahrs Scrub man, near Morrison Lane with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite efforts from officers and paramedics, he died at the scene. A crime scene was established moments later.

Investigators allege a stolen white Kia Stonic, fitted with stolen number plates, fled the area shortly after the shooting. The vehicle was later spotted on Kumbari Avenue in Labrador, prompting police to deploy a tyre deflation device on Jabiru Island. The car came to a stop a short time later at the intersection of Hope Island Road and Helensvale Road, where it was abandoned.

Police say the driver ran into scrubland near Saltwater Park. Dog Squad officers searched the area and arrested a 22-year-old Beenleigh man, who was allegedly found hiding underwater among reeds. A search of the man allegedly uncovered ammunition, and a firearm was located discarded nearby. A secondary crime scene was declared around the vehicle.

Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Fletcher said officers acted swiftly to contain the situation and take the man into custody.

Police are continuing their homicide investigation and are working to determine whether the victim and alleged offender were known to each other. Officers are appealing for information from the public, including any relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage.
