Sydney is preparing for a massive turnout this Sunday as 90,000 participants take part in the 55th annual City2Surf fun run - the world's largest event of its kind.

The sold-out 14-kilometre race will see runners journey from Hyde Park in the CBD to Bondi Beach, prompting major road closures and extensive transport plans across the city.

The Minns Government is urging the public to plan ahead, warning of significant delays and detours throughout the Eastern Suburbs, with strict parking restrictions in place along the course.

Road Closures and Clearways

  • Road closures will begin at 3:30am near Hyde Park, with major routes including William Street and New South Head Road closing from 6am.
  • The entire course will be closed to traffic by 7am and designated as a special event clearway from 1am.
  • Roads will begin reopening from 11:30am in the city and from 1pm in the eastern suburbs, with full access restored by 4pm.
  • Vehicles parked in clearway zones will be towed, with enforcement officers on patrol and fees applying.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas on Sunday.

Public Transport Encouraged

To minimise congestion, organisers are encouraging participants to use public transport, with additional metro, train, bus, and light rail services running throughout the day. Free travel is included in event registration - participants simply need to show their race bib or event t-shirt.

Shuttle buses will operate from Bondi Beach post-race, but long queues are expected. Participants are encouraged to remain in the area and enjoy local venues while waiting.

Bus routes between the CBD and the Eastern Suburbs will be significantly diverted.

Government Statements

Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said safety and preparation are key to the event's success.

"City2Surf is one of Sydney's most iconic events," she said. "We're closing up to 14 kilometres of roads to keep 90,000 runners safe - it's a major operation, and we're asking for the public's cooperation."

"Special event clearways will be strictly enforced, so check signage carefully - especially if you're parking overnight."

Minister for Tourism and Sport Stephen Kamper said the event highlights Sydney's global appeal.

"City2Surf showcases the best of our harbour city, from the heart of the CBD to the world-famous Bondi Beach," he said.

"It's a true celebration of community and fitness. I encourage everyone to come out, cheer on the runners, and soak up the energy of this iconic event."

The first race begins at 7:35am, with the final participants expected to cross the finish line around 2pm.
