Passengers travelling to Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport can expect a first-class metro experience, with extra-wide platforms, larger lifts, and luggage-friendly features designed for smooth, stress-free journeys.

The first images of Airport Terminal Station reveal platforms ten metres wide-double the size of those at Gadigal Station in the Sydney CBD-making them the widest on the Sydney Metro network. These design choices will accommodate large passenger volumes, ensuring fast movement in and out of the city's newest airport.

Larger ticket gates and lifts will further streamline travel, while the 23-kilometre Metro line-jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments-will carry up to 7,740 passengers per hour in each direction. The six-stop route will link the airport to St Marys in just 15 minutes, providing direct connections to the T1 Western Line and key destinations including Blacktown, Parramatta, Strathfield and Central Station.

Construction is advancing rapidly. At Airport Terminal Station, a 60-tonne crane is lowering precast concrete segments 25 metres underground, piecing them together to form the platform. The high-precision installation will take around 25 days, before work shifts to Airport Business Park and Orchard Hills stations. Bradfield Station has already completed platform installation.

The Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport project comes amid a series of milestones across the city's wider metro network, including:

  • 80% completion of works at Bankstown, with platforms and screens installed
  • Tunnel boring machine breakthroughs at Pyrmont and Parramatta
  • 90% completion of tunnelling for Sydney Metro West

Valued at $10.5 billion, the Western Sydney Airport line is being delivered with equal funding contributions of $5.25 billion from both the Australian and NSW governments.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the project will be a cornerstone for the emerging Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

"Having the right transport infrastructure in place will connect people with jobs, leisure, and help businesses thrive. We're making sure services are ready when this new city comes to life."

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the airport will be "Australia's most technologically advanced" and deserves a matching transport link.

"This is a key gateway for passengers, workers, and residents. Sydney's new airport has been decades in the making, and this metro will help connect our fastest-growing suburbs to it."

NSW Transport Minister John Graham said the station's design will ensure seamless air-to-rail travel.

"Bradfield and the airport precinct will grow rapidly around this infrastructure, bringing jobs close to home for millions in Western Sydney."

Federal MP Anne Stanley said the investment will "change the way workers and passengers travel," while State MP Nathan Hagarty noted it will "reshape our region with new jobs, industries, and opportunities closer to home."

The Western Sydney Airport Metro is on track to deliver a fast, high-tech, and reliable transport connection by the time the airport opens-marking a major leap forward for Greater Western Sydney's future.
