Paul Scarr Backs Ley, Dismisses Leadership Talk as 'Sound and Fury'
Shadow Immigration Minister Paul Scarr has dismissed speculation about an imminent Liberal leadership challenge as media hype, throwing his full support behind Opposition Leader Sussan Ley.
Amid mounting commentary following last week's dramatic split between the Liberals and the Nationals, Mr Scarr said claims of an internal move against Ms Ley were unfounded.
"Sussan has my 100 per cent support," he said.
Mr Scarr praised Ms Ley's performance since assuming the leadership, arguing she had successfully guided the party through a series of complex and sensitive issues while remaining anchored to Liberal values.
"I think Sussan has demonstrated, since becoming leader, how she's been able to navigate some very, very difficult issues," he said. "She's reinforced our Liberal Party values and she's been constructive."
The Coalition rupture has intensified speculation that senior figures including Angus Taylor or Andrew Hastie could emerge as challengers. However, Mr Scarr said he had received no approaches from colleagues seeking to rally support for any alternative candidate.
"From my perspective, there is so much speculation at the moment in the media," he said. "There is no announced challenge and no declared intention to seek a spill."
"So really, at the moment, it's all sound and fury signifying nothing."
