NSW Government Unveils 10-Year Homelessness Strategy
The Minns Labor Government has launched a landmark 10-year strategy aimed at tackling homelessness across New South Wales, marking the first whole-of-government approach of its kind in the state.
Led by Homes NSW, the strategy will shift the current system's focus towards early intervention, stronger local coordination, and long-term housing solutions. It was developed in collaboration with housing and homelessness services, Aboriginal organisations, and people with lived experience of homelessness.
Key Reforms in the Initial Rollout Include:
- Phasing out temporary hotel and motel accommodation in favour of more suitable, supported housing.
- Establishing local housing and homelessness collaboration networks with councils, service providers, and housing organisations to address service gaps and reduce duplication.
- Creating a NSW Street Sleeping Registry to streamline service access and prevent individuals from having to repeatedly share their stories.
- Introducing targeted responses for young people and Aboriginal communities, who often face unique barriers.
- Implementing a system-wide Housing First approach to prioritise immediate access to stable housing, supported by wraparound services.
- Reducing the number of people exiting government systems-such as hospitals, prisons or out-of-home care-into homelessness through improved cross-agency coordination.
The NSW Government will continue to work closely with the sector as reforms are developed and rolled out.
