Police have launched an investigation following a fatal crash on the M1 in the Tweed Shire this morning.

Emergency services were called to the motorway near Mooball, about 13 kilometres north of Mullumbimby, just after 9:30am on Monday (11 August 2025).

On arrival, officers were told multiple vehicles had struck a man in the southbound lanes. The man died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene has been established by Tweed/Byron Police District officers, who are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The M1 southbound remains closed, with diversions in place. Authorities are urging motorists to avoid the area and postpone any non-essential travel.
