The Albanese and Minns Governments have announced joint disaster assistance for five New England local government areas (LGAs) hit hard by heavy rain and snow.

The NSW Government's Natural Disaster Declaration now covers Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tamworth, Uralla, and Walcha, unlocking support under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

The funding package will provide:

  • Emergency accommodation and essential items for eligible residents in need.
  • Grants for low-income, uninsured households to replace essential items or carry out urgent structural repairs.
  • Financial assistance for councils to clean up and restore damaged public infrastructure.
  • Concessional loans for small businesses, primary producers, and non-profits, plus grants for sporting and recreation clubs to repair or replace damaged property.
  • Freight subsidies to help primary producers move livestock and fodder.
  • Funding for emergency services' counter-disaster operations.

Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain said the storms and snowfall had caused major disruption to homes, roads, and services.

"This support will help ease immediate hardship and assist with longer-term rebuilding efforts, including restoring public infrastructure and helping uninsured households get back on their feet," Ms McBain said.
"Our focus remains on standing with these communities as they recover, rebuild and prepare for future severe weather events."

NSW Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin said the declaration was a critical step in getting support to where it's needed most.

"The storms have caused widespread damage across New England. Roads, bridges, and essential services have been inundated, and there's a significant clean-up ahead," Ms Saffin said.
"We're making sure councils have the backing they need so communities can see repair and reconstruction work happen quickly."

Residents and businesses affected are encouraged to contact local recovery centres or Service NSW for details on available assistance.
