Police appeal for witnesses after daylight assault at Burleigh Heads National Park
Gold Coast detectives are appealing for public assistance as they investigate the alleged assault of a woman at Burleigh Heads National Park on Friday, 19 December.
Police say a 38-year-old Burleigh Heads woman was walking through the park about 5.30pm when she was grabbed from behind by an unknown man and physically assaulted. Two members of the public - a man and a woman - intervened during the incident, prompting the alleged offender to flee on foot in a northerly direction towards the lookout.
The woman sustained minor physical injuries as a result of the assault.
Investigators from the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch are urging the couple who came to the woman's aid to contact police, as well as anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant CCTV, mobile phone, dashcam or other vision from Burleigh Heads National Park or the nearby Goodwin Terrace area.
The incident is the second alleged assault involving a woman in the park in just over a month. Queensland Police said there is no evidence at this stage to suggest the two incidents are linked.
In the earlier matter, a 19-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted in the same area on Sunday, 2 November, after being grabbed from behind about 3.35pm. She was able to fight off her attacker, and a police helicopter was deployed to search the area, but no offender was located.
At the time, Chief Superintendent Kylie Rigg described the incident as a significant concern due to it occurring in broad daylight in a busy public area.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
