A young Caboolture man has died in a late-night collision after police say a truck drove against traffic on the Bruce Highway at Burpengary, slamming head-on into an oncoming car.

Emergency services were called just after 10:30pm, with authorities reporting multiple sightings of vehicles travelling southbound in the northbound lanes in the lead-up to the crash.

Police say the impact was catastrophic. The car's driver - a 26-year-old man - died at the scene. The truck driver was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and remains critically unwell.

The northbound lanes were closed for hours while investigators declared a crime scene and carried out forensic work, with diversions put in place until the road later reopened.

Detectives are now appealing urgently for dashcam footage and witnesses to help piece together how the wrong-way incident unfolded, including reports that another vehicle may have been following the truck.

Investigators say the driver's speed is also a focus of inquiries, and they are working to establish the sequence of events from any available CCTV, dashcam and public calls.

For commuters, it's a grim reminder of the stakes on one of Queensland's busiest corridors - and for investigators, it's a race to secure time-sensitive evidence before recordings are overwritten.
