Police investigating a fatal head-on crash north of Brisbane say they have located a vehicle suspected of being involved in the moments before an Isuzu truck travelled the wrong way on the Bruce Highway and collided with an oncoming car.

The crash occurred just after 10:30pm Tuesday near the Deception Bay Road exit at Burpengary, triggering lengthy traffic delays and sending shockwaves through commuters who rely on the corridor nightly. A 26-year-old man driving a Honda died at the scene. The 46-year-old truck driver remains in hospital in a critical condition, according to police.

In an update overnight, investigators said a Ford Ranger believed to have been following the truck was located at a business address in Narangba late Wednesday afternoon. Police said a Narangba man is assisting with inquiries as they work to establish exactly what happened before the collision.

Authorities have also pushed back against online speculation, urging anyone with genuine information - especially dashcam vision - to provide it directly to investigators. Police said reports have varied on how many vehicles may have been travelling in proximity to the truck at the time, and they are working through CCTV and witness statements to build a reliable timeline.

Detectives have indicated that initial CCTV suggests the truck was travelling at excessive speed, and they are appealing to anyone who saw the truck - or any associated vehicles - in the minutes leading up to the crash.

The investigation remains active. Police are asking witnesses to come forward, particularly drivers who were on the highway around the time of the incident and may have captured video that clarifies the truck's path, speed and any interactions with nearby vehicles.
