Phillies beat Mets 7-1 to reclaim first place in NL East

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa homered, Jesús Luzardo tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings and the Philadelphia Phillies regained sole possession of first place in the NL East with a 7-1 victory over the slumping New York Mets on Sunday night.

Nick Castellanos added two doubles and an RBI for the Phillies, who have won nine of 11 after taking two of three games in the series against their division rivals. Philadelphia (47-31) moved one game ahead of New York in the standings.

Francisco Lindor homered late for the Mets, who have lost eight of nine.

Luzardo (7-3) allowed three hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.

The Phillies did their damage against David Peterson (5-3) in the fourth when they scored five runs. Schwarber led off with his 24th homer, a drive off the batter’s eye in center field. After an RBI single by Otto Kemp made it 2-0, Sosa hit a three-run shot on an 84 mph slider into Philadelphia’s bullpen in right-center.

Sosa also singled and doubled.

MARINERS 14, CUBS 6

CHICAGO (AP) – Donovan Solano homered twice and drove in five runs, helping Seattle outslug Chicago for the win.

Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 31st homer for Seattle on a hot and windy afternoon at Wrigley Field. Dominic Canzone went deep twice as the Mariners won the rubber game of a weekend set that featured a total of 21 homers for the two teams.

Raleigh connected in the first inning against Colin Rea (4-3). The two-run drive to center field was his fourth homer of the series.

Seiya Suzuki homered twice and drove in three runs for the Cubs in their third loss in four games. Kyle Tucker and Reese McGuire also went deep for the NL Central leaders.

Chicago trimmed Seattle’s lead to 5-4 when Suzuki hit a two-run shot off Logan Gilbert (2-2) with two down in the fifth. It was Suzuki’s 20th homer of the season.

Seattle responded with two runs in the sixth. Canzone hit his second solo homer of the day, and Julio Rodríguez added a run-scoring groundout.

Solano made it 9-4 with a two-run shot off Chris Flexen in the seventh. Solano went 9 for 14 in the series with eight RBIs.

YANKEES 4, ORIOLES 2

NEW YORK (AP) – Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a go-ahead, two-run double off the right-center field wall in a three-run eighth inning, leading New York over Baltimore.

New York won its second straight after losing seven of its previous eight games.

A day after the Orioles were held hitless for seven innings by Clarke Schmidt, Jackson Holliday singled on Will Warren’s first pitch, setting up a two-run first that included Ryan O’Hearn’s run-scoring single and Colton Cowser’s RBI double.

Orioles backup catcher Maverick Handley left after being knocked over in the second during a collision at the plate with Chisholm, who scored on DJ LeMahieu’s single against Dean Kremer.

Ben Rice singled off Bryan Baker (3-2) leading off the eighth and Giancarlo Stanton’s single put runners at the corners. Chisholm doubled and is hitting .350 (21 for 60) with 11 RBIs since returning from the injured list, raising his average to .242.

New York boosted the lead when Gary Sánchez dropped shortstop Gunnar Henderson’s throw on LeMahieu’s grounder, allowing Chisholm to slide across the plate.

Fernando Cruz (2-3) struck out the side in the eighth and has 50 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings. Devin Williams pitched around a two-out single in the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances.

In a game that started at 11:39 a.m. to fulfill a Major League Baseball national television contract, Warren gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

TIGERS 9, RAYS 3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Riley Greene had three hits and Wenceel Pérez and Parker Meadows each homered and drove in three runs and Detroit snapped a three-game losing streak with a win against Tampa Bay at Steinbrenner Field.

Pérez broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run blast in the seventh inning off Garrett Cleavinger (0-3). Dillon Dingler added two hits and an RBI for Detroit, which maintained the best record in the majors (49-30).

All three of Greene’s hits, including doubles in the second and ninth, led off run-scoring innings. In left field, meanwhile, he made sliding catches to rob Jake Mangum and Junior Caminero of extra bases. And with two outs in the third, he retired Brandon Lowe on an acrobatic catch in foul territory, nearly flipping into the Tigers’ bullpen.

Yandy Díaz (13 games) and Lowe (11 games) each extended hitting streaks with infield singles for Tampa Bay.

Caminero hit his team-leading 19th homer and reached the 50-RBI mark on the year.

Tigers starter Casey Mize left a 1-1 game in the sixth after a visit from athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades, leaving with an undisclosed injury. He allowed one run and six hits in five innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Two Detroit starting pitchers already are on the injured list, right-handers Jackson Jobe (right elbow surgery) and Reese Olson (right ring finger inflammation).

Tyler Holton (3-3) picked up the win in relief.

MARLINS 5, BRAVES 3

MIAMI (AP) – Kyle Stowers ended a 31-game home run drought, Sandy Alcántara pitched six strong innings and Miami beat Atlanta in the rubber game of their three-game series.

Otto López had two hits and drove in two runs, and Xavier Edwards singled twice, doubled and had an RBI for the Marlins.

Alcántara (4-8) allowed three runs and six hits, walked two and struck out four. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner has completed six innings in three of his last four starts.

Anthony Bender tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Alcántara, Calvin Faucher got the last two outs in the eighth and Ronny Henriquez pitched the ninth for his second save.

López and Dane Myers hit run-scoring singles off Braves starter Bryce Elder in the fifth to put the Marlins ahead 4-2.

Elder (2-4) allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Braves struck quickly against Alcántara on Austin Riley’s RBI single in the first.

But Stowers tied it at 1 with a solo homer in the second. It was Stowers’ 11th homer of the season and first since he went deep twice against the Chicago Cubs on May 14.

Atlanta retook the lead on Drake Baldwin’s run-scoring single in the third before Miami tied it again when López hit an RBI single in the bottom half.

WHITE SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) – Miguel Vargas hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning and Chicago rallied to beat Toronto.

Vargas had two hits and drove in a pair as the White Sox won a series for the first time since taking two of three against Kansas City from June 6-8.

Chicago had lost nine of 10 coming into Sunday’s game. The White Sox snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 win Friday.

Bo Bichette’s RBI single in the seventh gave Toronto a 2-1 lead but the Blue Jays’ bullpen couldn’t hold it. Left-hander Brendon Little (3-1) took the loss while closer Jeff Hoffman blew his fourth save opportunity in 21 chances.

Activated off the paternity list before the game, White Sox right-hander Adrian Houser allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Jordan Leasure (2-4) got two outs in the seventh and Brandon Eisert worked the eighth. Rookie Grant Taylor finished for his first career save.

With temperatures in Toronto hovering around 90 degrees and high humidity making it feel even warmer, the retractable roof at Rogers Centre was kept closed Sunday.

PIRATES 8, RANGERS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Tommy Pham went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs, Spencer Horwitz and Bryan Reynolds also had three hits, and Pittsburgh used a five-run fifth inning to beat Texas and avoid a three-game sweep.

Pham tied it 2-all with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and capped the fifth-inning rally with an RBI double for a 7-2 advantage. He drove in Pittsburgh’s final run with a double in the seventh.

Horwitz went 3 for 4 with two doubles. He scored three runs and drove in two. Reynolds had a double and scored as the Pirates finished with 15 hits.

Texas starter Jack Leiter was lifted in favor of Caleb Boushley after walking Oneil Cruz to begin the fifth with the score tied at 2.

Cruz advanced to third on a groundout and Reynolds’ single. Nick Gonzales singled to give Pittsburgh the lead, and Horwitz hit a shot to right field that Adolis García misplayed into a two-run double that made it 5-2. Ke’Bryan Hayes added an RBI single before scoring on Pham’s double.

Bailey Falter walked two to begin the second and both scored on back-to-back RBI singles by Josh Smith and Josh Jung to put the Rangers up 2-0.

Hayes doubled in the Pirates’ first run after one-out singles by Joey Bart and Horwitz in the fourth.

Falter (6-3) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and five walks. Three relievers finished for Pittsburgh.

Leiter (4-5) permitted three runs and five hits in four-plus innings. Boushley gave up five runs in four innings.

BREWERS 9, TWINS 8

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Rhys Hoskins homered, doubled and drove in two runs on as Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of Minnesota with a victory.

Brice Turang hit a three-run homer and Caleb Durbin had three hits for the Brewers, who won their fourth straight and sit a season-high eight games over .500 at 43-35.

Byron Buxton homered twice, giving him six home runs in his last six games, while Brooks Lee and Carlos Correa each had four hits for the Twins, who have lost five straight series and 13 of their last 16 games.

On a steamy afternoon, the teams combined for 35 hits and used 14 pitchers. Brewers starter Quinn Priester was pulled after throwing 76 pitches in 3 1/3 innings. The win went to Rob Zastryzny (2-1), who pitched two-thirds of an inning.

Rookie David Festa (1-2) allowed eight runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Milwaukee led 9-3 in the fifth inning, but the Twins didn’t go quietly, with Ty France’s two-run homer in the eighth cutting the lead to 9-8.

Brewers closer Trevor Megill entered the game with runners on the corners and two out in the eighth. He struck out Jonah Bride, then got out of a jam in the ninth to pick up his 17th save.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

DENVER (AP) – Mickey Moniak hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run fifth inning, Antonio Senzatala won his second straight start, and the major league-worst Colorado snapped a three-game skid with a victory over Arizona.

The Rockies (18-60) avoided the worst record through 78 games in the modern era. The 1907 St. Louis Cardinals and 1932 Detroit Tigers also went 18-60.

Moniak hit a first-pitch changeup from Brandon Pfaadt (8-5) 385 feet down the right-field line to make it 4-2. It was his second homer of the three-game series and 11th of the season.

Senzatela (3-10) gave up two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He had won once in 14 starts before beating Washington on Tuesday.

Randal Grichuk had two hits and two RBIs for the D-backs, who were attempting to move three games over .500 for the first time since May 20.

Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez doubled to extend his extra-base hit streak to four games. He is 10 for 18 with four homers, two doubles and nine RBIs over that stretch.

Seth Halvorsen retired Ketel Marte on a fly ball with a runner on second in the ninth for his sixth save, and the Rockies’ Tyler Freeman extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games.

Pfaadt has given up 22 earned runs in his last 18 innings.

REDS 4, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Andrew Abbott retired the final 18 batters he faced in seven commanding innings, and Cincinnati avoided a three-game sweep with a win against St. Louis.

Jose Trevino, Jake Fraley and Elly de la Cruz each doubled and scored, and Matt McLain hit his ninth home run for the Reds.

The Cardinals had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Trevino doubled and scored on Fraley’s liner to the right-center field gap that put the Reds ahead 2-1 in the fifth. After a passed ball, Fraley scored on TJ Friedl’s sacrifice fly.

Cincinnati extended the lead when de la Cruz doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on Gavin Lux’s RBI groundout.

Abbott (7-1) allowed only three singles, including Yohel Pozo’s RBI single in the second inning. The Cardinals didn’t have another base runner until Taylor Rogers issued a one-out walk to Jose Barrero in the eighth.

Abbott had three strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 1.79. Jake Fraley had 10 putouts in right field on fly balls.

Emilio Pagán worked a spotless ninth for his 18th save in 21 chances.

Miles Mikolas (4-5) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings for St. Louis. He struck out six and walked one.

GIANTS 9, RED SOX 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Heliot Ramos doubled home two runs to highlight San Francisco’s decisive seventh inning after an earlier two-run single, and the Giants rallied to beat Boston.

Casey Schmitt and Mike Yastrzemski each hit solo home runs in the fifth against Red Sox starter Luis Giolito and Willy Adames connected in the eighth.

With Adames and Schmitt each aboard on hits to start the seventh, Tyler Fitzgerald bunted home the tying run to chase reliever Greg Weissert (2-2) and San Francisco went ahead when Red Sox second baseman Romy González missed a routine catch on Yastrzemski’s liner off Justin Wilson.

Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run homer in the fifth and González homered one out later for the Red Sox, then the Giants cleared the fences twice in the bottom half to tie the game at 4.

Ceddanne Rafaela homered in the sixth for Boston.

After the Red Sox went ahead in the first on a fielding error by Ramos in left field, he delivered with the single in the third.

PADRES 3, ROYALS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Jose Iglesias tied the game with two-run, two-out, bases-loaded pinch-hit single in the seventh inning and then drove in the winning run with a grounder in the ninth for San Diego, who beat Kansas City to take two of three.

Iglesias hit a soft bouncer to shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who fielded it, spun around and threw home too late to get Luis Arraez.

Arraez started the decisive rally with a single off Daniel Lynch IV (3-2) and took third on Xander Bogaerts’ double. John Schreiber came on and allowed Iglesias’ grounder.

Robert Suarez (2-3) worked the ninth. He is appealing his three-game suspension for hitting Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani on Thursday night.

Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer for the Royals and phenom Jac Caglianone leaped and got his glove over the right-field wall to rob Jackson Merrill of a two-run home run in the eighth.

DODGERS 13, NATIONALS 7

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Shohei Ohtani pitched one hitless inning in his second mound start of the season before hitting a three-run triple and a two-run homer, and Max Muncy had a grand slam and a three-run homer in Los Angeles’ victory over Washington.

Ohtani recorded two strikeouts while throwing 18 pitches, allowing his only baserunner on an error when Mookie Betts dropped a popup in the sun. The two-way superstar is easing his way back onto the mound with short starts, and he was more effective against the Nats than in his season mound debut last Monday against San Diego.

Ohtani then had his most productive offensive game in some time, delivering two huge hits in the late innings.

He cleared the bases with a drive into the right field corner during the Dodgers’ seven-run seventh, and he added his 26th homer in the eighth to put LA up 13-3.

GUARDIANS 3, ATHLETICS 0

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Slade Cecconi pitched a career-high seven innings and Emmanuel Clase escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to lead Cleveland to a victory over the Athletics in the rubber game of their series.

Cecconi (3-3) allowed six hits and a walk in his seventh start for Cleveland after making 17 for Arizona over the previous two seasons. Clase gave up a walk and singles to Tyler Soderstrom and JJ Bleday to load the bases before finishing for his second straight save and 18th in 21 opportunities.

The Guardians grabbed a 2-0 lead against A’s starter JP Sears (5-7) in the second. Angel Martínez walked, stole second and scored on a single by Gabriel Arias. Nolan Jones doubled in Arias.

Steven Kwan singled and scored on a two-out base hit by David Fry in the fifth for the final run.

Sears allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings. He is 1-5 in his last eight starts.

ASTROS 8, ANGELS 7

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Mauricio Dubón homered twice and Josh Hader stayed perfect in 19 save chances this season by getting Mike Trout to line out to center field with a runner on second as Houston held off Los Angeles in the rubber game of their series.

Dubón’s second career multihomer game began with a leadoff shot against starter Kyle Hendricks in the fifth inning for the Astros’ first run. Dubón added a two-run drive off Hunter Strickland for a 6-5 lead in the sixth.

Jeremy Peña had an RBI double and Jake Meyers added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5.

Nolan Schanuel hit an RBI single for the Angels in the seventh, and Zach Neto trimmed it to 8-7 with a solo homer off Hader in the ninth. Schanuel finished with three hits and four RBIs.

Peña hit his 11th home run one out after Dubón’s shot in the fifth to tie it 2-all. Meyers singled, stole second and scored on a two-out error by Luis Rengifo at third base. Christian Walker followed with an RBI double for a 4-2 lead.

Taylor Ward had a two-out double off Astros rookie Ryan Gusto, and Logan O’Hoppe hit his third two-run homer in two days to give the Angels a 2-0 lead in the second. O’Hoppe has 17 home runs and is closing in on the team record for a catcher set by Lance Parrish with 22 in 1990.

LaMonte Wade Jr. and Christian Moore singled in the bottom half, and Schanuel gave the Angels a 5-4 lead with his sixth homer.

Gusto (5-3) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings with seven strikeouts.
