Ten people have been confirmed dead with 16 hospitalized in an apparant terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, Australia.

Police are responding to a developing shooting incident at Sydney's Bondi Beach, with members of the public urged to avoid the area and take shelter.

New South Wales Police confirmed shots were fired near Bondi Pavilion on Campbell Parade about 6.40pm on Sunday. Witnesses reported that two men exited a vehicle and opened fire, allegedly using high-powered firearms.

Video circulating on social media appears to show people fleeing the beach as gunshots and police sirens can be heard. The footage has not been independently verified.

Emergency services remain on scene amid fears of multiple casualties. Witnesses have claimed several people were injured, with unconfirmed reports of fatalities.

"Police are responding to a developing incident at Bondi Beach and are urging the public to avoid the area," NSW Police said in a statement. "Anyone at the scene should take shelter. More information will be provided when available."

The beach was crowded with thousands of locals and tourists following a hot summer day, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees. Large crowds were also in the area for a festival celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, known as Chanukah by the Sea.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said authorities were aware of an active security situation and urged people nearby to follow directions from police.

It is understood two men have been arrested. The situation remains ongoing.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has released a statement.

“The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing,” he said.

“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected.

“I just have spoken to the AFP Commissioner and the NSW Premier.

“We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed.

“I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police.”

Member for Wentworth Allegra Spender has released a statement.

“This is horrifying,” she says.

“It's still not clear exactly what has happened yet. The reporting is police have apprehended the perpetrators.  I am urging people to follow police requests and avoid Bondi Beach.

“This is not the Australia that we know and love. I know our community will come together on this. “
