A national day of mourning to honour the victims of the Bondi terror attack will be held on January 22, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced.

The Prime Minister said the commemorative day would centre on the theme "light will win" and serve as a moment of unity, reflection and remembrance for communities across the country.

Mr Albanese confirmed he consulted with Sydney rabbi Yehoram Ulman, who lost family members in the attack, before settling on the date and theme.

"This will be a gathering of unity and remembrance, guided by the message that light will prevail," the Prime Minister said.

As part of the observance, flags will be flown at half-mast at all Commonwealth buildings nationwide, with further details about ceremonies and events to be released later in the week.
