Fremantle have pulled off a stunning final-quarter comeback to edge out Port Adelaide by six points, climbing into the AFL's top four for the first time this season.

Captain Alex Pearce was the hero, soaring above a pack to take a spectacular mark and slotting the match-winning goal with less than a minute on the clock. The 13.14 (92) to 13.8 (86) victory was Fremantle's first over the Power at Adelaide Oval.

The win lifts the Dockers from sixth to fourth with just two games remaining - against Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs - in the lead-up to finals.

Fremantle burst out of the blocks, dominating the opening term 4.5 to 0.4. But Port roared back in the second quarter with a blistering 8.1, including seven majors in a 16-minute blitz, to seize control.

Trailing by 14 points early in the last term, the Dockers rallied to kick four of the final five goals, sealing the upset.

Midfielders Caleb Serong (28 disposals) and Jaeger O'Meara (26) were instrumental in the fightback, while Luke Jackson (23) impressed early. Patrick Voss booted three goals, with Shai Bolton, Michael Frederick, Murphy Reid and Josh Treacy each kicking two.

For Port, Zak Butters was electric with a game-high 29 possessions, sparking their second-quarter surge, while defender Aliir Aliir was outstanding with 17 marks and even a rare goal.

Earlier in the round, Sydney shocked Brisbane at the Gabba to shake up the top-eight picture, while Essendon's Dylan Shiel faces suspension over a dangerous tackle that risked "serious head or neck injury" to a teammate.

The Lions had hoped to capitalise on Collingwood's slip against Hawthorn, but the Swans delivered a costly blow to last year's grand finalists.

At the MCG, St Kilda survived a tense final quarter against Richmond, holding on for a four-point win. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera provided the highlight, launching a long-range running shot from 50 metres that bounced wide before sharply veering through for a remarkable goal.
