A convicted drug trafficker deported from Australia has been arrested in Iraq over alleged drug importation and smuggling offences.

Kazem Hamad - also known as Kadhim Malik Hamad Rabah al-Hajami - was detained following an official request from Australian authorities, Iraq's National Center for International Judicial Cooperation has confirmed.

The arrest was carried out in coordination with Iraq's Ministry of Interior, with proceedings initiated by the First Karkh Investigation Court, which handles major drug cases.

Iraqi authorities allege Hamad imported large quantities of drugs into Iraq and Australia and maintained links with organised crime networks operating internationally.

The Australian Federal Police has confirmed Hamad's identity.

Hamad was deported from Australia in 2023 and has been a key person of interest in Victoria's investigation into a series of firebombings targeting tobacco shops and businesses.

Police have previously alleged he orchestrated extortion and arson attacks linked to Melbourne's so-called "tobacco wars".

An AFP spokesperson said further information would be released later.
