At least six people have been killed and dozens more are feared trapped after a multistorey building collapsed near a Delhi University campus in New Delhi.

The building, located in the Satya Niketan area, was reportedly home to mostly students. Rescue teams worked through the rubble on Sunday, using earthmovers, firefighters, police and sniffer dogs to search for survivors.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said 10 victims were brought to the hospital. Five were already dead on arrival, while another critically injured person later died.

Fire officer Abhilash Malik said as many as 40 people could still be trapped beneath the debris. Authorities had not immediately confirmed how many survivors remained or what caused the collapse.

A nearby building was evacuated as a precaution after concerns were raised about its structural stability.

Video footage circulating online showed a man trapped beneath the rubble calling for help as people gathered at the scene. Other footage showed local residents attempting to rescue victims before emergency crews arrived.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said saving the trapped students was the priority and pledged that those responsible would face action.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office expressed condolences to the families of those killed and said authorities were assisting victims and responding at the scene.

Building collapses are relatively common in parts of India during the June-to-September monsoon season, when heavy rain can weaken structures.

The latest incident comes a day after another three-storey building collapsed in northern India following heavy rainfall. No deaths were reported in that incident.

In 2025, at least 11 people were killed when a residential building collapsed in another part of New Delhi.
