Biden unveils plans for high-speed rail from LA to Las Vegas

The Biden administration has unveiled plans for a cutting-edge high-speed electric train that will link Los Angeles and Las Vegas, aiming for its inauguration before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

In a significant move toward enhancing rail infrastructure, the White House has earmarked $8.2 billion for various pivotal rail projects.

Among these initiatives are the creation of a Los Angeles to Las Vegas corridor, a route from Raleigh, North Carolina to Richmond, Virginia, expanded services across California's central valley, and more.

This investment is part of President Joe Biden's comprehensive "Investing in America" Agenda.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed admiration for Japan's advanced train infrastructure following his participation in the G7 Hiroshima Summit.

Reflecting on his experience, Buttigieg remarked, "You come home thinking, 'Why can't we have something like that?' Especially knowing that they've had high-speed rail in some form since the 1960s. It's not just Japan; regions like North Africa and the Middle East showcase levels of rail service surpassing what the U.S. has achieved.

We recognize the imperative to change that-and that's precisely what we're undertaking."

Buttigieg acknowledged the dearth of investment in new rail services in recent decades but emphasized a reversal of this trend. While acknowledging that change won't be immediate, he assured travelers of imminent improvements within a few years.

"This is an opportunity to outline a comprehensive vision for a future rail network and allocate funds to develop those routes," Buttigieg explained.

"Our overarching goal is to provide Americans with exceptional choices in passenger rail travel, a realm where we've lagged behind for much of our lives.

There was a time when the U.S. led in rail, similar to our dominance in aviation and other surface transportation."

Though high-speed rail has long been a sought-after aspiration among travelers, the allocated funding breathes life into the project. An administration official hinted that the Los Angeles to Las Vegas route could potentially be completed ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The funding announcement named over 35 rail projects, including:

• Las Vegas to the Los Angeles metro area: Covering 218 miles in just two hours via high-speed train, this route aims to serve 11 million passengers annually.
• Dallas to Houston: A novel high-speed service linking Texas' populous cities.
• Raleigh to Richmond: Introducing a new route to save travelers 90 minutes in commute time.
• New York City to Scranton, Pennsylvania: Enhancing an existing dormant track for easier access to New York City.
• Fort Collins, Colorado to Pueblo, Colorado: Connecting previously unserved parts of Colorado through a new rail route.

The administration emphasized that these projects provide "safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly travel options," aiming to offer downtown-to-downtown connectivity without the hassle of airport security or driving.

Buttigieg reiterated, "When you compare our geography to other parts of the world-especially Europe or Japan-providing such options becomes an obvious choice. Let's make it an unequivocal choice here."
