Saka strikes as Arsenal maintain perfect Premier League start

Arsenal have made an impressive opening statement in their Premier League title defence, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal in the 59th minute as Mikel Arteta's side claimed their second consecutive win without conceding, following their 3-0 victory over Coventry in the opening round.

The result also provided a fitting way for Arteta to celebrate his 250th league match as Arsenal manager.

The Gunners fielded the same starting XI that began their emphatic victory against Coventry, but they were made to work considerably harder by a Villa side desperate to recover from their disastrous 4-0 defeat at Brighton.

Saka once again proved crucial, delivering when Arsenal needed him most.

After a subdued first half in attack, Arteta introduced Eberechi Eze at the break in place of Christos Tzolis, and the change immediately gave Arsenal greater attacking threat.

Kai Havertz came close shortly after the restart, but Villa defender Victor Lindelof produced a timely intervention to prevent him converting Declan Rice's pass.

Arsenal were then awarded a penalty after Ian Maatsen collided with Saka, only for VAR to overturn the decision after determining the contact occurred just outside the penalty area.

Martin Odegaard subsequently sent the resulting free-kick narrowly wide.

Villa had earlier threatened through Emiliano Buendia, whose powerful effort struck the crossbar during a lively opening spell.

But Arsenal gradually took control and finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute.

Eze released Riccardo Calafiori into the Villa penalty area, and the Italian defender drove a low ball across goal. Saka reacted quickest, getting a touch from close range to put Arsenal ahead.

Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki later denied Havertz, while the visitors continued to defend resolutely as Emery's side searched for an equaliser.

Arsenal also handed former Villa defender Ezri Konsa his debut late in the match after his £51 million ($69m) move to the Gunners on August 21. His appearance was greeted by a mixture of boos and applause from the home supporters.

With Konsa helping Arsenal contain Villa's attack, the visitors saw out the final stages to secure another valuable three points.

Arteta described the victory as a "massive win", highlighting the difficulty of collecting points at Villa Park.

"It's a tough place to come and earn three points," Arteta told Sky Sports. "I think we deserved it."

He also praised his substitutes for helping Arsenal maintain their advantage.

For Villa, the defeat extended a miserable start to the campaign and left Emery's team without a point from their opening two matches.

The club have undergone a dramatic squad overhaul during the summer, with financial considerations contributing to the departures of several key players, including Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans.

Nicolas Jackson made his Villa debut as Watkins' replacement in attack, while Suzuki started in goal following his move from Parma.

Emery acknowledged the disappointment but insisted there were encouraging signs in Villa's performance.

"There are 38 matches and we have played two matches and we don't have a point," he said. "But hopefully we can get better."

Arsenal now face their first major challenge of the season when they host London rivals Chelsea on Sunday. Chelsea have also won their opening two matches, setting up an early test of Arsenal's championship credentials.

Arteta could also have another attacking option available, with Arsenal continuing to monitor Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

The only setback for Arsenal was a late concern over Rice, who limped off in the closing stages.
