Prince Harry and Meghan Markle return to UK after royal rift

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their two children have returned to the United Kingdom, marking a significant change for the family after years of living in the United States following their departure from royal duties.

British media reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at Birmingham Airport on Wednesday with their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. The family travelled as private citizens.

Their return follows the unexpected announcement last week that Harry and Meghan planned to relocate to Britain for an extended period.

The family is reportedly preparing to live in the Cotswolds, a picturesque region of central England, where the children have been enrolled at a private school. They are also expected to retain their home in California, where they have lived since leaving the UK.

Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, stepped down as working members of the British royal family in 2020 and moved to the United States. They retained their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex but no longer carry out official royal duties.

Their departure followed a highly publicised breakdown in relations with other members of the royal family. Tensions intensified after the couple's interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which Meghan discussed her mental health struggles and alleged that concerns had been raised within the royal household about the potential skin colour of their future son.

Harry later detailed his experiences and family tensions in his memoir, Spare, which became a major international bestseller.

After leaving Britain, Harry and Meghan pursued commercial opportunities in the United States, including major agreements with Netflix and Spotify. Their business ventures have achieved varying degrees of success.

In recent years, Harry has indicated that he would like to improve relations with his father, King Charles III. The prince has made several visits to Britain, including following the king's cancer diagnosis.

The family's new home in the Cotswolds will place Harry relatively close to Highgrove House, the king's private country residence.

However, the return has also raised questions about the family's relationship with the royal household. Reports indicate that King Charles was not informed in advance of the precise timing of Harry and Meghan's relocation and learned of the plans around the same time as the wider public.

Security is expected to be another major issue.

Harry lost a legal challenge against the UK government's decision to reduce the level of publicly funded security provided to him after he ceased to be a working royal. He has previously argued that he does not feel comfortable bringing his wife and children to Britain without police protection funded by taxpayers.

It remains unclear whether the family will receive any publicly funded security during their extended stay.

The move represents a notable shift for Harry and Meghan, who have spent the past six years building a life in California while maintaining an often strained relationship with the British royal family.
