Iran launches attacks on US bases after deadly strike on wedding gathering

Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against US military positions and other targets across the Middle East, hours after a reported US strike in southern Iran killed civilians attending a wedding celebration.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it carried out a "heavy" ballistic missile attack against Prince Hassan airbase in Jordan and a US Marine base, describing the strikes as retaliation for recent American attacks on Iranian targets.

Iranian Supreme Leader Mojatba Khamenei also issued his first message since the latest escalation began, warning that Iran's armed forces had "unforgettable lessons" in store for the United States.

The retaliatory attacks prompted heightened military alerts across the region. Jordan said its air defences intercepted 10 of 13 missiles that entered its airspace, with the remaining three landing in remote areas.

Bahrain reported that its air-defence systems intercepted and destroyed Iranian drones, while Kuwait said its forces were actively responding to drone attacks.

The escalation followed a new wave of US strikes against Iranian targets on September 1. US Central Command said American forces had targeted air-defence installations, radar systems, maritime assets and Iranian capabilities linked to mine-laying operations.

Washington said the strikes were carried out after attempted Iranian attacks against commercial shipping and US personnel in the region, including around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media reported explosions at several locations in southern Iran, including Asaluyeh, Jiroft, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, Konarak, Chabahar, Jask, Sirik and Lavan.

The Iranian Red Crescent said one of the strikes in Sirik hit a home where a wedding celebration was taking place. At least four people, including a child, were reported killed, while more than 50 others were injured.

Iranian officials condemned the incident as an attack on civilians, adding to growing concerns over the human cost of the expanding conflict.

The latest exchange of attacks comes as diplomatic efforts continue to revive negotiations between Washington and Tehran. However, the escalation has complicated those efforts, with civilians increasingly exposed to the consequences of direct military confrontation between the two countries.
