Several US military aircraft were damaged when Iran launched a missile attack on a military base in Jordan that hosts American personnel, according to reports.

Iran fired 20 ballistic missiles at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base on September 9, with Jordanian authorities saying its air defences intercepted 18 of the missiles.

Iran said the attack was carried out in response to US forces destroying five Iranian tankers earlier that day, escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

An A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft was reportedly hit during the attack and suffered significant damage, including the loss of a wing.

Around eight F-15 fighter jets were also reported to have sustained lighter damage. The aircraft were subsequently returned to operational service.

No deaths or injuries were reported in connection with the missile strikes in Jordan.

The attack adds to growing concerns about the impact of the conflict on US military assets in the region. A Congressional Research Service report issued in May said 42 US military aircraft had been destroyed or damaged since the war with Iran began in February.

The latest incident highlights the continuing risks faced by American forces and military equipment at bases across the region as hostilities between the United States and Iran continue.
