WASHINGTON (AP) – A 110-foot Ferris wheel, state pavilions and cowboy demonstrations were among the attractions at the Great American State Fair on the National Mall. Held as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, the 16-day event showcased the history, culture and traditions of U.S. states and territories.
The round-of-16 game between Portugal and Spain on Monday at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys was the last World Cup appearance for Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Later in Seattle, the United States was playing Belgium and all eyes were expected to be on U.S. forward Folarin Balogun. Balogun was red-carded last week but his automatic suspension was lifted after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened on behalf of the star.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Julio Cortez is a veteran photojournalist with The Associated Press. He is the AP regional chief photographer and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Cortez is working his third World Cup, has been with the AP 16 years and is based in Dallas.
Argentina opened Tuesday’s round of 16 action at the World Cup by defeating Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta. Lionel Messi scored again for the defending champion, which rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second half. Switzerland then earned the final quarterfinal spot, eliminating Colombia in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Erling Haaland scored two goals to lead Norway past Brazil 2-1 and into the World Cup quarterfinals. The star striker found the net in the 79th minute and again in the 90th in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday to reach seven goals for the tournament, matching Lionel Messi of Argentina and Kylian Mbappé of France atop the scoring list.
