The Bureau of Meteorology had earlier issued an alert for a severe geomagnetic storm, a space weather event that can trigger the dazzling display often called the southern lights.
While a geomagnetic storm might sound alarming, for photographers and skywatchers it's a welcome signal - a chance to capture one of nature's most stunning light shows.
The storm's intensity was so strong that the aurora was visible well beyond its usual range, with sightings reported as far north as the outskirts of Perth.
